Today, the most prestigious set of poker tournaments is the World Series of Poker. It was first started in the year 1969 by Tom Moore of San Antonio, Texas. It was started at the Holiday Hotel and Casino of Reno, and was then an invitational event. The person who had won at this inaugural event was Crandall Addington who went on to find a place in the top ten World series of Poker Main Event for eight times. And this record still stands as of the year 2006.

However, it was the idea of the Las Vegas casino owner Benny Binion, a poker player and his two sons Jack and Ted to start the set of tournaments of the World Series of Poker. It was from the year 1971 that the events of the WSOP awarded cash prizes for winners and in 1973, five-card stud was added to the events of No Limit and Texas Hold’em. And after that, new games have been added, and removed from the list of games in the World Series of Poker.

As of 2006, there were altogether 45 events, covering most poker variations, in the World Series of Poker. The lowball variants being played now are Texas hold’em, Seven-card stud and Omaha hold’em. Horse, Shoe, Chinese Poker and Five card stud are variants that used to be played in the past, but were removed, only to return to WSOP in 2006. In addition to their prize money, event winners of the World Series of Poker get a coveted gold bracelet.

It was the Travel Channel’s World Poker Tour that increased the popularity of the World Series of Poker. Though ESPN had covered the event for many years, it was new technologies like table cameras that got television viewers involved in the hands as they were played. More advancements are expected in the World Series of Poker with the purchase of its rights from Binion’s by Harrah’s in the year 2004.

There has been a massive increase in the number of people participating in the World Series of Poker, and this is why advancements are necessary in it. There were only 839 participants in 2003; however, in 2004, there were 2576 players. The top prize then was $5,000,000 and the top prize for the year 2006, $6,000,000 to be battled between over 7,500 players. Let it be known that a majority of these participants are from the internet poker rooms.

The internet has helped in the progress of tournament poker because of its 24/7 availability and the possibility of playing numerous hands that used to take months, in a few days. Men and women, from all walks of life participate in the WSOP with the aggressive players having an expertise in mathematical analysis ruling the top positions. No longer is experience enough to win at poker; some winners of the World Series of Poker are just college students!
